Punakaiki Thunder. Paparoa National Park, West Coast, New Zealand, South Island - 2/15/2012.
Like many of the experiences I encountered in New Zealand, the timing was just right for this shot and location. I had hoped to make it here, to the Pankace Rocks as they are known, at sunset, and on the way here a local had told me to be sure to arrive at high tide if at all possible. I checked the tide charts and found out that during the one afternoon I was going to have to visit this location, high tide took place at 7:30 pm, right as the sun was beginning to set. Thunderous was the only way to describe the sound as the huge waves slammed against these rocks creating explosions and cascades of water like I've never seen before.
