Smoke on the Water
Smoke on the Water. Westland/Tai Poutini National Park, West Coast, New Zealand, South Island - 2/16/2012.
The scene that presented itself along the Waiho river was so unbelievable I thought I was looking at some sort of special effect. The mist floating along the entire length of this river valley is a natural phenomenon. The river is glacier fed and filled with extremely cold water. As the river drops quickly and steeply into the subtropical heated valley taking its run into the sea, a mist is created. The combination of temperatures makes for a continuously mysterious environment and the locals call the phenomenon "smoking water."
